Technology may make us feel like a cave-man sometimes because it’s ever-changing and we must constantly learn in order to keep up with it. Setting up web conferences, installing new software in order to view certain files, troubleshooting slow-running programs will certainly seem difficult the first times – now imagine trying to set up a wireless network. But relax, it’s not as difficult as it sounds, and you’re certainly not a cave-man.

Because we trust in your capacities, we – with our partnership with Microsoft, have created this entry so you can independently set a wireless network by yourself.

First of all, make sure your broadband internet connection and modem, as well as the wireless network adapter from your portable or desktop pc, are working properly.

The most important device that you need to make the wireless network function is a wireless router. An artifact that allows you to connect to the internet by using radio signals instead of wires. It usually has one or two antennas to spread the radio signals.

Now it’s time to set up your internet connection. If you don’t know how to do it, you can follow the instructions that came with your modem to connect it to your computer and the internet.

Once you have configured your modem, it’s time to position your wireless router. Microsoft recommends for better quality of connection that you place the device in a central location, so the signal can be well distributed. Do not place them off the floor or walls or close to metal objects, since the physical obstructions will negatively affect the distribution of the signals.

Your modem and router should be close to one another, depending on the longitude of the wire that will connect them. You’re going to need a net wire that will transmit the internet service from the modem to the router, which will distribute it via radio waves.

Plug one end of the wire to the modem and the other on the router to the socket that says “Modem” – it’s usually located in the ends of the router and has a color to identify it.

Turn on the WiFi of your computer and connect. Once it’s done, Microsoft recommends that you secure your wireless network. You wouldn’t want someone else accessing to your network. Archis Tech can help you do this if you’re unsure where to begin.

Microsoft favors changing the default user name and password of your network; it helps you protect your router. You will be able to do this by accessing the configuration of your router. The indications of how to access it should be in the documentation of your device.

Lastly, Microsoft also exhorts you to create a security key to your wireless network. Here, Microsoft explains you how to do it depending on the version of Windows that’s running on your PC:

  • In Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, select Start, start typing Network and Sharing Center, and then choose it in the list.
  • In Windows 10, select Start, then select Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network and Sharing Center.
  • Select Set up a new connection or network.
  • Select Set up a new network, then choose Next.

The wizard will guide you through the process of creating a network name and security key. It’s recommended that at the moment of setting the key of your wireless network up, you use the WPA2 type. Once you have set the password of your wireless network, make sure to write it down and keep it in a safe place.

It’s of high importance that you activate your firewall; since it will also help you protect your devices by not allowing the intrusion of a third party in your wireless network.

After doing all the previous steps, you’re ready to connect to your wireless network: select the network icon in the notification area, choose the wireless network that you want to connect to and select connect, and type the password when requested. Accept, and you’ll be ready to navigate the World Wide Web.
